Chisels, Gouges & Awls
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Being offered for sale is the antique SOCKET CHISEL by "T.H. WITHERBY" (weakly stamped/incised over "CAST STEEL" at top of chisel, see 2nd & 3rd pics), from circa the mid 19th century (limited, conflicting information found online about this company's history - possibly late 19th but as early as 1850), as seen in the pictures/as described in the title. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES. Being offered for sale lightly cleaned/spruced up but a thorough detailing/restoration may be required to bring to its full potential. Ready to use or proudly display! SATISFACTION GUARANTEED or your money back...no questions asked!
CONDITION NOTES:
Very Good antique condition with minor overall wear throughout but NO major breaks or repairs. NO damage at socket end but there's a maker's defect/sloppy fold of sorts (see 6th pic). Lightly wire-wheel cleaned to remove rust, which revealed areas of minor -to- moderate pitting throughout (see pics). Blade smoothed & freshly sharpened. Wood handle may or may not be original (doesn't fit smooth - it fits snug & tight, just not visibly smooth, see pics). It has a small chunk missing from butt-end (7th pic) and a split running entire length (also 7th pics) BUT despite those issues, it remains structurally solid & strong, by way of the steel-ring/wrapped butt. Otherwise, no damage and very nice, deep patina. Fully functional, ready to use collectible old tool!! See pics.
DIMENSIONS & WEIGHT:
Measures 18-1/4" long, overall (measured blade to handle butt). Blade to socket end is 10-5/8" long. Blade is 1-7/8" wide. Please see ruler in pictures for size/scale reference. Additional measurements shall be provided upon request. Total weight is 2 lbs. 5.5 oz..
