Baskets & Boxes
Being offered for sale is the antique DOVETAILED & HAND-CARVED HARDWOOD (walnut?) TOOL BOX and/or BLANKET CHEST (child/doll/small size) and/or DECORATIVE TRUNK by unknown maker (no visible maker's marks aside from the "STANLEY WORKS" at hinges and the previous owner's name "D. HILER" incised at each brass handle...possibly/likely AAFA/homemade folk art box), from circa the mid -to- late 19th century (best guess), as seen in the pictures/as described in the title. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR CONDITION NOTES. Being offered for sale AS-FOUND, uncleaned. May require a thorough detailing to bring to its full potential. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED or your money back...no questions asked!
Very Good antique condition with minor -to- moderate overall wear but remains structurally rigid & strong, with awesomely large dovetail joints. The beefy "STANLEY WORKS" hinges are solid. Same goes for the (2) Chippendale style brass handles. It is clear that this box once had a removable tray and latching/locking system that have both since been removed and the keyhole areas covered over with the top band of wood trim (see pictures 1, 2, 3 & 9). At backside, near one of the hinges, there is a 3/8" x 1-3/4" slot (see pictures 6 thru 9), which may or may not have been put there on purpose (perhaps was used as a strongbox when it had a lock?). Superbly rich patina to all materials throughout. Lid rests level when closed and box sits flat on ground with no wobble. All-in-all, an extraordinary, ultra strong old chest with gorgeous eye-appeal!! See pics.
Measures 34-1/2" wide x 11-3/8" deep x 10-3/8" tall. Weighs a solid, heavy 28 lbs. 3.0 oz..
